Sustainability in the SUB
Reduce, Recycle, Reuse
In recent years the Student Union has implemented significant energy saving initiatives. These sustainable initiatives were made a facility wide priority six years ago and we continue to move ahead.
Energy Systems
Energy Systems were replaced or re-engineered to utilize the latest technology and materials. A campus wide energy performance plan was also initiated and implemented in the Student Union.
- Water cooled food service refrigerators were replaced with an air cooled systems saving thousands of gallons of water annually, 2000.
- High efficiency hot water system installed 2001.
- Energy efficient air-cooling system 2002.
- Low water use faucets and toilets, 2004.
- Energy efficient lighting and ballasts, 2004.
- Energy efficient roof, 2006.
- Direct digital controls for heating and cooling systems, 2009
- Energy efficient HVAC upgrades and replacement 2009
Green Cleaning Program
A Green Cleaning Program wasimplemented in 2003 to provide a safer environment for our visitors, our staff and our waste water systems.
- Converted to green certified cleaning solutions for all custodial processes.
- Eliminated over 40 cleaning chemicals used in the SUB.
- Reduced costs by using concentrates and reduced waste with reusable bottles.
- Reduced costs and use of paper towels with new dispensing system.
Recycling Program
The Recycling Program in the Student Union teamed up with the ASBSU recycling coordinator to improve the amount of recycling materials collected in the Student Union.
- Addition of 6 collection stations in the SUB bringing the total to 16, 2003
- Addition of collection baskets for all work stations in the SUB, 2003.
- Event recycling 2003.
- Outdoor collection stations 2005
- Cardboard compactor, 2009.
- Grease containment system for bio-diesel, 2009
University Dining
University Dining has taken the lead in the SUB and around campus to reduce, recycle and reuse in the food service provided for students, staff and visitors.
- Tray-less service in Boise River Café.
- Event Recycling for cans and bottles.
- Biodegradable containers and service ware for retail dining and catering.
